While waiting for the planes and helicopters to fly we took a side trip to BMEWS. Our interest in going to BMEWS is glaciers. From the overlook at BMEWS three separate glaciers lead from the Ice Sheet into the fjord. These glaciers are a major source of icebergs. The glacier descends into the fjord, like a giant wall pushing into the water. These walls can be hundreds of feet high, although they are not that high at BMEWS. At the edge between the glacier and the water, giant pieces of ice break off the glacier and plunge into the water. These giant pieces of ice become icebergs.

In this picture we can see one of the glaciers visible from BMEWS.

This view down the fjord shows the icebergs, pieces of ice broken off the glaciers, slowing moving out towards the bay and, ultimately, ocean waters.
