You never know what will happen when traveling to the Arctic. 44 Hours and several delays later, I have arrived at Kanger Air Base in Greenland. Weather and mechanical problems delayed our trip from Chicago to Albany yesterday. Several members of our party were on the Albany flight. We left Chicago after we were scheduled to arrive in Albany, finally arriving in Albany and our hotel about 11 PM. The layover was very short, we checked out and began loading our bus for Scratton Air Base by 5:30 AM. Three planes were scheduled to leave for Kanger this morning. Unfortunately, one of the planes was damaged during loading and only two aircraft departed for Kanger. We made a scheduled stop at Goose Bay to top off our fuel tanks--fourty passengers and a plane fully-loaded with equipment flying against a strong headwind burns large amounts of fuel. We arrived at Kanger at 5:25 PM Central Daylight Time (8:25 local time), checked and headed for a well-deserved meal. Tommorrow, scientists, researchers, and support personnel for Summitt Research Camp will depart early in the morning. Those of us heading to Thule will remain at Kanger for another day until our transportation arrives. I am looking forward to the opportunity to catch some sleep--I've managed about 10 hours of good rest in the last 64 hours.
