One of the challenges of building in the Arctic is keeping the ground cold underneath the buildings. In the Arctic the ground is insulated from the buildings so that the ground remains cold. This keeps the permafrost from melting. If the permafrost melts, then the building’s foundation will settle or shift, causing the building to collapse. These pictures show some of the ways that buildings and pipelines are insulated through elevation.
