Dear Kevin,
Hi, again, from the Healy! Wow! I think that Patty and I are very lucky because inside the ship often feels like the inside of a cold house (back home in NC). The temperature in the computer lab right now is 64.3 degrees Fahrenheit. Patty and I wear normal clothes with long johns underneath and a fleece jacket over top. If I am outside for only a few minutes in this 30 degree F weather, then I do not bother to put on a coat, hat, or gloves. Many of us do like to sleep in our warm sleeping bags at night even though we have beds with sheets and blankets. My sleeping bag is fleece. Two questions for you: What kinds of clothes do you wear to keep you warm under your parka? If a pair of jeans doesn't keep me or Patty warm enough, then I guess it wouldn't keep you warm enough either! Have you been craving carbohydrates? I am really enjoying reading your journals and looking at your photos! Don't forget to drink lots of water, keep your camera battery warm, and write with a pencil instead of a pen. Take care, Samantha Barlow TREC Teacher USCGC Healy, Bering Sea |

Hi Sam. It is great to hear from you. Thanks for following my expedition. Mike, Gayle, and I are enjoying your journals too. I wear three layers of clothes when I go outside. I have thermal underwear as a first layer. Next, I wear a layer of fleece pants and a fleece jacket. My final layer is an insulated Carhartt bib and a parka.
To keep my feet warm, I wear a pair of sock liners, a pair of fleece socks, and glacier boots. Glacier boots rule! They keep my toes warm and toasty. To keep my head and face warm, I wear a hat and a balaclava. A balaclava is like a hat that covers your whole face with an opening for your eyes and nose. I also need to wear glacier sunglasses or ski googles when I go outside. It is so bright, even late in the day, that you cannot see because of the sun reflecting off the snow. I love foods with carbohydrates and I do crave them here. It is instant energy for me. We are fortunate to have 2 wonderful cooks at camp that prepare our meals. I am eating pizza now. Yum. I will continue to drink lots of water. We also drink a lot of gatorade to keep us from getting too dehydrated. Bye. |
