The First Ice
8-09-05

Yesterday night (still daylight) we were standing at the bridge for hours watching the horizon and discussing the sea ice. The satellite photos indicated that we are going to hit the ice soon.

What will it look like I was wondering? About 6:00 am I heard a booming noise and waves of vibrations went through the ship, again and again. We had reached the ice. I jumped out of my bunk (bed) got my camera and went outside. What a magnificent site. Lots of small sea ice pieces were floating in an almost black ocean. The ship slowed down to about 5 knots making so the hulls (walls) do not get damaged by the relatively old and strong sea ice.

How many photos can one take of chunks of sea ice? I could not put my camera away. Moments like this were we see something we have never encountered before are the ones we will never forget. Standing at the bow of a ship looking at a wide open ocean, speechless by this tranquility of beauty, taking in the moment, is something I will remember for the rest of my life.

The zipper of her jacket is still open and I don't see gloves either.
Can't be too cold yet. biggrin.gif

But I tell you that we could need some sun here in Germany.
Supposedly it is summer but it does not feel like it. Perhaps the north pole shifted.
