TREC Virtual Base Camp _ Teacher's Journal _ Exploration day

Posted by: Robert_Oddo Aug 3 2005, 04:19 AM

Today we made our way up to another lake to make some preliminary observations. It started out very cold and rainy. As long as you keep moving it doesn't get too cold. This lake we went to is called Kongress and it is special since it doesn't seem to be fed by a glacier. So Mike and Steve want to look at cores from this lake and compare them to the cores from Lake Linne and see the similarities and differences. So we went up there with the sea cat and various other instruments and profiled the lake and took some water samples. We also set some sediment trap that will remain there over the winter. It was cool up there. There was a small hut up there with some springs feeding the lake. There was very little vegetation so the place had very primitive feeling to it. I almost felt as if I were on another planet. At the end of the day we hauled the batteries and the sea cat and the outboard engine back down the valley from Kongress. It was a long day. We arrived back at camp at approximately 8:30 at night very tired and hungry. But we all had a feeling of accomplishment in that we collected some very valuable information.

we outline the bottom of the boat with this depthfinder GPS and then download it into the filed computer so we can map out the lake
