What is it that you hope to learn from the core samples that where taken?

QUOTE(Timothy Barr @ Sep 13 2005, 05:43 PM) Good question, Timothy! The core samples will be studied many different ways. Looking at the size of the sediments in the cores, what the sediment is made of, what organisms are in the sediment, how thick the different layers are, etc. all provide clues as to what the climate was like and what the ocean circulation was like in the past (remember, the deeper the core, the farther back in time you are looking). The more information we can gather about what climate and circulation patterns were in the past, the better we are able to predict what might happen in the future, and to what extent human activity is having on those patterns. I hope that answers your question. If you want more specific details about how we can learn these things from the core samples, please let me know! Steve |
