Hi Kenny,
The banding operation is timed to take place when the birds cannot fly. There are a few weeks in the summer when the adult birds are losing their old flight feathers and growing new ones. They need new feathers to get ready for their long migratory flight back to the southern, lower 48 United States. There are goslings, too. They cannot fly yet either. They are just growing their first flight feathers! And, actually, some of the adults flight feathers are fully grown and they COULD fly, but they choose to stay with their goslings. Besides putting bands on their legs, measurements are taken of the length of a leg bone (the tarsus), the length of the top of the beak (the culmen), and their weight. Hope you enjoyed reading the journals! Ms Pierce |
