Hi Leslie

When you banded and recaptured some of the geese, why did you look for the brooding patch on a grown female?

Hi Olivia,

Good question! The presence of a brood patch means that the female did build a nest this summer. It doesn't necessarily mean that her eggs actually hatched, but it gives the biologists more information on estimating the number of nesting pairs of snow geese. Also, for an individual bird, if they recapture her again in the future or have in the past, it can tell biologists how often females are successful in setting up nests in their lifetime. This type of information can help biologists figure out the rate of reproduction in a population, or how quickly the population is growing.

Hope this answers your question, and keep asking more great questions!

Thanks,
Leslie
