Hi Mrs. Byers and Kindergarteners,
I am so glad to hear from you and I would be delighted to answer your questions!

What does the Bering Sea look like?
The Bering Sea sometimes looks white because it is covered with ice and sometimes looks dark blue when we can see the water, and sometimes looks gray when the sky is cloudy.

What is the temperature?
The Bering Sea water is usually around -1°C (around 30°F) and the air temperature is also right around freezing and sometimes below freezing.

Are you going to the North Pole?
The ship will not be going far enough north to go to the North Pole this time, but this is as far North as I have ever gone!

Did you break any ice?
The ship breaks through ice almost every day!

Can you bring ice home?
I don't think I can bring ice home. There is not enough room in my suitcase and I think it might melt since it takes 12 hours to fly home from the next port.

How can you stay on a boat that long?
I packed my suitcase with enough clothes for about 1 week. When they get dirty, I can wash and dry them in the ship's laundry room. The ship has many little rooms like hotel rooms with beds and bathrooms so I can sleep, go potty, and take a shower. The ship's kitchen is really big and the cooks pack enough food to feed the whole crew for a month!

Did you see any baby walruses?
I have not seen any walrus calves (baby walruses are called calves), but I have seen some adult walruses.

Did you go on the ice?
The boat goes through ice all the time, but I have not gone off the ship to walk on it because it has not been stable enough so far.

What is like there?
It is freezing and windy and lately we have had lots of clouds. It has even snowed several times. It is a lot of fun to live on a ship. I can feel the whole ship shake and rattle when we are breaking ice. I can feel the ship swaying when we are just sailing through water without ice.

Are you cold?
I am not very cold when I am inside the ship because I wear long johns under my jeans and sweaters. I put on many layers of clothing and a thick, orange suit when I go out on the deck of the ship.

Did you see any stone fish?
I have not seen any stone fish because the Bering Sea is too cold for them to live here.

Did you see any seals?
Yes, I have seen a few seals and even a baby seal called a seal pup. One of the scientists on the ship is studying seals.

Is it fun?
Oh yes, it is very fun to live on the ship and to work with the scientists while we sail around this cold sea.

Did you take pictures?
I have taken lots of pictures and I have sent some to your teacher. I hope that she can show them to you.

Did you see any ice bergs?
Ice bergs are chunks of ice that fall off of a glacier that is near the ocean and land in the ocean. I have not seen any ice bergs, because we have not been near any glaciers lately. I have seen lots of sea ice that forms on the surface of the ocean and sometimes gets very thick. It floats around on the surface of the ocean and looks similar to an ice berg.

Is the food good?
The food is very good, especially the desserts. There is a baker on the ship that spends a lot of time making yummy pies, cakes, and sweets from scratch!

Did you see fish or sharks?
I have only seen just a few fish and not any sharks.

Thank you so much for the wonderful questions and for thinking of me. I miss you all very much! I hope that you enjoy the pictures that I am sending. You can find more in the Photo Gallery on my website:
