hey crumrine, its jon. i dont get that the snow can act like a big blanket for the plants and make them grow quicker even though it is snow. for the caribou this is bad, will they eventually become extinct if this keeps happening? what about the rest of the animals that live in that area?

Jon,

I agree that the first time you hear it, it doesn't make sense that snow can insulate. I always thought that snow was pretty cold.

The fact is that snow does insulate and act like a blanket. The layers of snow have air pockets and once the layer of snow is thick enough it will insulate the layers below. So even though it will still be cold under the snow, it will be much warmer than uncovered ground.
