This evening we had a surprise. Richard Johannsen, First Secretary to the US Ambassador to Denmark, is working with a group of a Greenlandic and Danish reporters.

One of the purposes of the meeting, according to the First Secretary, was to learn about the good things that Americans are doing in other nations so that this part of the story can be presented to other nations. The First Secretary also described the role of the Embassy in American foreign policy. Our embassies are the front line of American foreign policy, the Ambassador’s job is to represent and explain the position of the American President and Government. The First Secretary also indicated that there is another part of American foreign that that takes place. That part is people to people, Americans living and working with people of other nations as well as people of other nations living and working with Americans. The members of our team learned a great deal about American foreign policy directly from an official representative of American foreign policy. Amazing, one would never have thought that being involved in international science also means that one is directly involved in American foreign policy. That means scientists must remember that for many people we represent who Americans are. This is a big responsiblity that all scientists must keep in mind as they work in other nations and throughout the world.
