TREC Virtual Base Camp _ Teacher's Journal _ Swimming in the Arctic

Posted by: John_Sode Jul 13 2005, 12:41 AM

Just couldn't let this event go unposted. While hiking through the eastern hills of southern Greenland this afternoon our group came upon a beautiful fen. The lake was crystal clear, with cold rich water radiating a brillant blue against the deep gray rocks covered with black and orange lichens. Nestled between the hills with rich green vegetation flowing to the water's edge, the lake was simply too inviting to resist temptation. Several members of our crew immediately began preparing to go swimming, taking advantage of their "best opportunity to go swimming in Greenland, north of the Arctic Circle." Oh to be young again!!!

Hey John,
We too went swimming the other day in the fiord, but we had survival suits on.

Hi John,

It might be warm enough on the Ikpikpuk next week, but too muddy! It sounds beautiful in Thule!

Hi Leslie!!

We either have a heat wave (59F) or freezing, driving rain. Everything can change within a few hours. Hope you are having a great time!!!

Hi John,

It's been warm and sunny lately, in the high 40's to mid-50's, but the last two days have been very windy!

Your trip sounds awesome!

Leslie
