QUOTE(Alejandro E. Mejia @ May 25 2005, 02:34 PM) Dr. Coakely, what exactly is the purpose of the SCICEX geophysics program, and how does it relate to our environment? SCICEX was a program to study the Arctic Ocean for oceanography and geology and geophysics. We were able to do science with submarines that you could not do from surface ships. Submarines can go anywhere in the Arctic. Icebreakers can only go where the ice permits them. This mobility made it possible for us to survey the Arctic Ocean and go places where icebreakers have not been and cannot go. We learned a lot about how the seafloor (my primary interest) and about how seawater coming from the North Atlantic is warming the Arctic Ocean. |
