May 4 – Packing List
What did I end up stuffing in my suitcase?

Location: Dutch Harbor, Grand Aleutian Hotel, passing time while we wait for the ship to arrive.

To answer the last question I posed…so, how long IS long underwear?

It is long; I mean really long, and certainly not very becoming. No pictures of that will be available! But, it is very warm and I am so glad to have it with me!

What DID I really end up packing?
Many of you have been asking me that question and all I could really say was that I would pack items of clothing to keep me warm and dry. Why is staying warm and dry important? I challenge you to write responses in the “Ask Sam and Patty or the Scientist (Lee)” message board. You tell me what you know about these things! Why do I need to stay warm and dry? I think I know a few Boy Scouts that might be able to answer this one…

Oh, and 7th graders, you studied light. Do a little volunteer, fun, research for me and tell me why it was so important for me to buy polarized sunglasses. Think about where I’m going. Post to the “Ask Sam and Patty…” message board.

I have been collecting items in a box for 2 months now. I went through all this stuff 3 times and I think I have still over packed, big time! How on Earth will I even get it all on the ship? I have one medium-sized rolling suitcase for my clothes, one duffle bag for my cold weather gear, one backpack, and one computer in a case.

Here’s my packing list:
2 pairs of comfortable shoes
2 pairs of jeans
5 assorted fleece sweaters
Jammies - 1 sweatshirt and 1pair of sweatpants, 1 pair of pink flannel jammie bottoms
1 pair of workout pants
4 t-shirts
Several pairs of unmentionables
2 pairs of long, thermal underwear
Tons of socks – both cotton and wool
3 pairs of sock liners for the wool socks
1 pair of polarized sunglasses
1 pair of Extratuff®, insulated, steel toed, waterproof boots
1 hooded Columbia®, waterproof jacket with liner
1 pair of Goretex®, waterproof pants
2 toboggans
4 pairs of gloves, insulated and waterproof
1 neck gaiter and 2 colorful scarves
1 fleece sleeping bag
1 flannel pillowcase
2 towels
2 washcloths
1 hand towel
Assorted toiletries, big enough bottles to last a month
Sunscreen – Do you know what for?
Medications (motion sickness, pain reliever, etc.)
Hair dryer
Shower shoes (flip flops)
1 water bottle
3 field guides - fish, shells, and invertebrates
3 pleasure reading books, one on CD
4 games (cards, cribbage board, Yahtzee, and Scene It – Music)
1 Sudoku math puzzle
Various CDs and computer/camera equipment and cords
Pens, pencils, and a notebook
Digital pictures of friends and family
Cash, checks, credit card, and ID

I did forget one thing…the kitchen sink, or so the idiom goes. If you think of something, then don’t tell me, because I really won’t know that I miss it until you say it!
