Ms. N-O,
I know that there are several active volcanoes, and I was wondering if you knew when the last one erupted, and if you dug deep enough into the ground near a volcano if you would find remnants of previous eruptions. Hope you're having fun!

Actually, some of the volcanoes on the Kuril Islands are currently
erupting. They erupt mostly with steam and ash, but some of the ones in
the northern part were erupting just a few weeks ago and could erupt at
any time. They are very small eruptions, just venting. This is good,
though, because the more small eruptions a volcano has, the less likely
for a big eruption to build up.

One of the things that we will be doing is digging holes along the coast
and elsewhere on the islands to find the evidence of previous
eruptions. We can find tephra (like ash and rocks for volcano) and
tsunami evidence that tells us about the volcanic history.
Thanks for the questions!
Mrs. N-O
