TREC Virtual Base Camp _ Arctic Picture of the Day _ Picture #1

Posted by: Amy_Clapp Jun 24 2005, 03:09 PM

So, this is hopefully going to be a digital, interactive 20 questions of my experience in the arctic. Each day that I am working with the PARTNERS Project, I will post an interesting or unique picture of something I saw that day. I will either just post the picture or post a picture with a question attached to it. You may ask me questions about the picture or try and answer the question.

The first person to identify the picture or answer the question correctly will win!

Dear Ms.Clapp

I think this picture is of the Northern Lights [Aurora Borealis] because the lights occur in the Artic summer. Hope you write back soon!

Sincerly,
Caitlin McCluskey

Hi Caitlin,
You are absolutely right....that is a picture of the Northern Lights. However, the Northern Lights can only be seen in the Arctic in the winter time because in the summer it is light all through the night so it is impossible to see them. Because it stays light all night in parts of the Arctic, it is sometimes called the land of the midnight sun!!!

I hope you are having a good summer and that I hear from you again soon!!!

Take Care,
Amy
