Leslie,
I could understand about drying the grasses in a certain way to get standardized results. But I had a little more trouble with the idea of drying the soil samples to find out their water content. Are you collecting the water vapor??

I wish I could remember words like "frob" and "truve" when I'm playing word games!

Hi Mike,

Brian weighed the soil samples in the field right after we collected them. So, then after he dries them out, he can get a dry soil weight, subtract that from the wet soil weight, giving him the water weight! The soil samples are all a uniform size.

He will also take the dried soil and rehydrate them to figure out salinity. I'm not exactly sure how he does that. I'll have to get back to you with that info!

Thanks for the great questions,
Leslie
