BBQ on the Beach What do you do in Barrow on a warm (almost 50 F, but with windchill?) summer evening? Have a BBQ on the beach! Last Friday, Earl and Chris Finkler invited a bunch of folks to meet them on the beach for a wiener roast. About 15 people showed up for hot dogs, fruit, chips, salad, cookies, and cupcakes. We even roasted marshmallows and made s’mores. (Harris and Sandra Stuermer and their daughter, Greta, had never had s’mores before!) There was kite flying, remote-controlled sailboat piloting and lots of good conversation. We were joined by some interesting wildlife including an inquisitive spotted seal that came close to investigate the commotion on the beach. A gray whale swam by, flocks of migrating king eiders flew by, and the beach and surf were littered with jelly fish. All in all it was a wonderful evening in Barrow! Here’s the group around the fire. Clockwise from left, sitting are David Robbins, Paul Robbins, Teri Andreason, Greta Stuermer, Sandra Stuermer, me, and Chie Sakakibara, and standing (without heads) are Harold Curran, Harris Stuermer, and Earl Finkler. Here’s Robert Suydam flying his kite. It took many dives into the ocean. You can see Barrow off in the distance. Photo credit to Chie Sakakibara. |
