The U.S. Sponsored Teacher at Sea Program
Now in its second year, the U.S. Sponsored Teacher at Sea program is proud to have Alan Gelatt, a Romulus, New York teacher, sailing on IODP Expedition 309. Gelatt's engaging and informative weekly journal entries - available on the web at: http://iodp.ldeo.columbia.edu/EDU/TAS/309/ reveal his involvement in the expedition's scientific activities. Gelatt is also translating his shipboard experiences into a poster for use in secondary student laboratory exercises. Based upon high-resolution core photos from Expedition 309 and core sampling activities, the poster builds upon the work of Dr. Jonathan Rice, Teacher at Sea during Expedition 301, who created "Laboratory Briefs," or fact sheets that can be used by classroom teachers and their students. Four lab briefs are now available at http://www.iodpusio.org/Education/lab_briefs.html. Dr. Rice was also featured in the summer issue of The Earth Scientist, co-published by JOI and the National Earth Science Teachers Association http://www.joilearning.org/ Recently, Rice delivered opening remarks for a presentation by Dr. Jeff Fox to the National Congress for Science Education during a JOI-sponsored dinner event at the Science Museum of Minnesota http://www.usssp-iodp.org/Education/NCSE.html Dr. Rice's words earned him a warm reception and attendees agreed he, "provided a true bridge between the teachers and IODP."
