We all became convinced that there we very few polar bears around and our guard was down a bit the last few days. We still carried weapons but most of us were not convinced any were around. I have been looking for prints. Nothing!!! This morning, after breakfast, most of us were preparing for the day out in the field. Carlos was returning from the dorm and came within 40 or 50 yards of a polar bear walking around our camp. He came running into the main building, yelling bear. The dogs were going crazy in their pen and we looked out the window and yes there was a polar bear walking around outside. First off we had to get the dogs in, so two or three of us grabbed some flare guns and rifles and went out to the dogs in the pens and got them and then watched the bear slowly lumber off down the beach, not very interested in us. We waited around a couple of hours before going out in the field to be sure we wouldn't have another encounter but all in all it was very exciting. We took one of the dogs out in the field with us just for a little added protection and kept an eye out the entire day. But the bear never returned.

We finished most of our work on the lake today. We pulled the remaining sediment traps and reset others that will collect sediments over the winter. I helped Lauren finish her pebble counts. At the end of the day we hauled a bunch of equipment down to the field camp. Tomorrow we will go up to the glacier for the last time!!! All in all a very exciting day!
