Last night I received news from the Dino Camp that left me with mixed emotions. The Dino Camp boat motors refuse to start and they cannot access the quarry without functioning boats. Dave and I were presented with a choice, stay at North Camp and continue working with Paul measuring sections or return to the Dino Camp so they can use a functioning boat. I wanted to learn more about Paul’s work, but the best option for all was to return upriver.

As expected, the morning weather did not bring pleasant weather for traveling up river on an inflatable boat. Dave and I bundled in many layers in anticipation for a chilly ride. As we departed, snow flakes began to fall and the wind increased in its intensity. After two hours, the wind produced such large waves on the river that staying dry was impossible. Each wave launched the boat skyward, followed by the front end crashing down into the foamy water. Each splash heaved huge amounts of water across the bow completely drenching both Dave and I. No sane person would ever say logistics in the Arctic are easy – but they sure do provide lots of excitement.

Paul hopes for better weather as cold rain slams down on
North Camp. Meanwhile, Dave and I prepare to travel 30
miles upriver to lend a hand to the Dino Camp.
