Hi Mrs. Nikula,

I just finished reading your journal entries and you mentioned something about the KGB clearance. What is that?
So you are now heading towards the Kuril Islands and have left Russia?
Well, sounds like you were having a good time in Russia, for the most part. Sorry to hear that your bag didn't make it.

For our travels to the Kuril Islands, because they are in a border part of Russia, we have to be cleared by the KGB to travel there. The KGB is like the CIA or FBI in the United States. They make sure that we are not criminals or have any negative reasons that we could not be allowed to travel to this area. It took longer than expected for us to be cleared so we left Korsakov a day later than expected. We are still technically in Russia while we are in the Kuril Islands, just a part that is farther away from the mainland and not very populated.
