Dear Megan,

We are doing well and have accomplished quite a bit of work, but I thank you for noticing that my daughter and the teachers aboard were gettting far more questions than I was. The ship has done a good job getting us to all of the places on our cruise plan so I think we are going to come home with a lot of new data and samples. I think it has been challenging for Ruth, but she has worked hard at answering questions that have come in and she has set up a web page just here on the ship for her photos and activities. She has also participated in some of the sampling, but it is hard for someone in middle school because we stay up long hours and often work when it is cold and wet with heavy and large equipment, doing some of the same sampling in all of the different locations we go.

I enjoy coming out on the ship once or twice a year because it gives me a chance to work with other students and scientists and there is nothing better than to get away from the office and feel like you are getting something accomplished. We have a number of university students with us and they are working very hard and well together.

The weather has also turned beautiful and warm and the many herds of walruses we saw yesterday were particularly spectacular. So it is a really special experience to be out here in the Arctic right as spring begins and I hope that you will have chances to see some of the things that we have had the opportunity to see on this trip.

Thanks for writing,

Lee Cooper
