TREC Virtual Base Camp _ Ask the Teacher (Amy) or the Scientist (Max) _ fresh water

Posted by: Joe Sep 14 2005, 11:14 PM

Hi Amy,

what was the most unusual thing about our arctic rivers? are they shrinking, or growing? are there any rapid changes you have discovered since the last study? i would like to know, because we slightly depend on fresh water fish.

Dear Joe,
The biggest thing that I noticed about the Arctic Rivers that we were studying on this summer is how big they are. When I think of a river in Vermont (where I am from) I think of a river that is maybe 30-40 feet across. However, the rivers in the Arctic that we worked on were huge. It is amazing to me to think about the volume of water that gets discharged from these huge rivers. The rest of your question about any drastic changes would be better answered by Max, as he has the data that you might be interested in.
Thanks,
Amy
