410 Miles to the North Pole

We are about 410 miles from the North Pole. Air -4C, Water -1.7C

We had a sunny day today and enjoyed this rare occasion very much. It is a lot colder now and it is a good idea to put on more layers of cloths. The helicopter crew did training flights.

The ship is moving toward coring position 8 (not straight to the North Pole)
During night we sailed through thicker ice. Unfortunately, the seismic gear could not withstand the big and heavy ice floes and we lost 250 m of the streamer with the microphones.

We are continuing to get good data from the multi beam equipment. Walter Reynoso-Peralta is responsible for processing this data. I have asked him to translate the letter to my students.

Walter is from Argentina. He is a Lieutenant of the Argentinean Navy and holds a Masters degree in Geophysics. He is a postgraduate student of the NIPPON FOUNDATON/GEBCO training program and works on his postgraduate certificate on bathymetry. On the Healy he is processing underway multi- beam data to produce a 2-D or 3-D image of the ocean floor. This data supports the science projects underway and adds new information to the IBCAO map.

Hello physics students at Hanna High School, Brownsville, TX!

Greetings from your physics teacher, currently at the USCGC Healy, 82N. The Healy is a U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker. We are 142 people aboard and sail from Dutch Harbor, AK, over the North Pole to Tromsoe, Norway. Dust off the globe in our classroom and find the locations. I am looking forward to communicate with you. Yes, we will do the most interesting physics lessons ever - physics lessons from the North Pole!

Why are we studying the Arctic?
The Polar Regions are the air conditioners for our Earth. Changes here have global impact. Leading researchers from nine different countries are part of the science crew. Their goal is it to collect data and contribute to the effort to better understand our global environment and what causes the current changes.
Mr. Hoffmann will give you an introduction to the TREC program and how to contact me. Your first assignment is reading my teacher log! Have fun.

Hola estudiantes de física de la Escuela Secundaria Hanna, Bronwsville, TX!

Saludos de su Maestra de Física, actualmente navegando a bordo del rompehielos de la Guardia Costera de los Estados Unidos de América USCGC Healy. A bordo somos 142 personas y estamos navegamos desde Dutch Harbor, Alaska, cruzaremos el Polo Norte para tomar puerto en Tromso, Noruega. Revisen el globo terráqueo en el aula y localicen las posiciones enunciadas anteriormente. Espero comunicarme con ustedes en lo sucesivo. Si, vamos a llevar a cabo las mas interesantes clases de Física que nunca hayan podido tener, y estas serán desde el Polo Norte!

¿Por que estamos investigando el Ártico?
Las regiones polares son los acondicionadores de aire para nuestro planeta Tierra. Los cambios que se producen en el Océano Polar Artico tienen un impacto a nivel global. Investigadores procedentes de nueve países forman parte de la tripulación científica. Su objetivo es colectar datos para obtener la mejor información a cerca del cambio climático a nivel global y entender las causas que lo producen, como así también sus consecuencias.
El señor Hoffmann les dará una introducción acerca del programa TREC y como ponerse en contacto conmigo. Su primer tarea es leer en la red, mi registro diario de actividades! Diviértanse.
