Objective One: Determine how far Thule is from your hometown.

Objective Two: Trace the aircraft's flight from Albany, New York to Thule using the flight information provided.

Materials;

1. Large map that includes your hometown and the North Atlantic.

2. Stick pins

3. String

4. Ruler

Instructions:

1. Place stick pins in the following locations:

a. your hometown
b. Albany, New York
c. Goose Bay Air Base
d Kanger Air Base
e Thule Air Base

2. Connect the pins for b through e above, in order, with string and measure the
distance. Use the map's scale to convert this distance into miles or kilometers.

3. Connect pins a and e with string and measure the distance. Use the map's scale to convert this distance into miles or kilometers.

Applications:

1. How does the distance to Thule from New York compare to the distance from your hometown?

2. If a road existed, and you could travel 70 miles per hour, how long would the journey from Scratton Air Base to Thule Air Base, via Goose Bay Air Base, be?

3. If a road existed, and you could travel 70 miles per hour, how long would the journey from your house to Thule Air Base be if you could drive directly there?
