Hello Leslie,

I understand that you'll be banding snow geese in early August...I'm curious as to when they might begin to molt or how you go about catching them for banding? Will you be able to herd them like the eiders at Cold Bay or will you use some version of mist nets that they fly into or some kind of trap?

Today is sunny and bright in Barrow.

Jill

Hi Jill,

The snow geese have begun to molt already. We've seen lots of feathers laying around the nesting grounds. Typically they molt between mid-July and the first week of August.

They are herded into "pots" (nets set up in a V position and closed up as the birds enter to form a holding pen) by a helicopter in the air and people on the ground. It should be interesting. I'll talk more about that in August.
