Arctic Winter & Webinar
08-31 / 09-01

The Arctic winter is coming. Our temperatures dropped to the lower 20’s F. Snow and ice cover the decks and one has to watch their steps. It is slippery. The 16th piston core was taken on August 31. It was very heavy work for Dale and the MST’s because of the low temperature parts of the core lining were frozen into place.
During night the Swedish icebreaker Oden rendezvoused with Healy. What a sight to have a second ship next to us in this icy dessert. She will go in front of the Healy and give us an ice free path for deploying our seismic instruments. In the afternoon, the Oden's helicopter visited Healy with the Captain of the Oden, Thomes Arnell, the Swedish Polar Secretariate Project Leader on Oden, Dr. Anders Karlqusit, and two of the Principal Investigators and Project Leaders, Dr. Goran Hjorck and Dr. Bert Rudels. A small group from Healy flew to the Oden consisting of the Co-Chief scientists, B. Coakley and D. Darby along with the coordinator from the Swedish Polar Secretariat onboard Healy, Eva Gronlund. Thus begins the collaboration between the two ships and the science parties on both ships. We are following large leads at the moment which are opened up under the Northeasterly winds and a low pressure system. Dennis, Martin, Glenn and the ice group around Don Perovitch continued to collecting samples of dirty ice which we can see floating by since August 28.

On September 1st ARCUS and the Healy hosted two webinars/live conferences to schools in Brownsville, TX, Rhode Island and New Zealand. It was a big success. Captain Dan Oliver, LCDR James Dalitsch , LTJG Jessica Noel, MSTC Donald Snider, all the leading scientists, Ruben the Swedish and Eva Gronlund from the Swedish Polar secretariat were present to answer questions and explain our mission. The ship is moving closer to the North Pole. We have crossed the Polar Circle awhile ago and we will cross the International Dateline soon. An old standing tradition requires an Initiation Ceremony for people that have never crossed the Polar Circle before, in other words, paying your dues to Neptune. Rumors about the horrifying things that could happen to the “Blue Noses” (People that have not crossed the polar circle by ship) spread through the ship like fire. Participation in the ceremony is optional. I was debating what to do. On one hand I would like to become an “Honorable Polar Bear” by going through the ceremony on the other hand there are those rumors about crawling through rotten food, cutting off the hair…
I will decide tomorrow.

Best Regards,
Ute
