Betty Carvellas is a grade 7-12, biology teacher from Essex High School in Essex Junction, Vermont. She is participating in the TEA program (Teachers Experiencing Antarctica and the Arctic) and her 2005 Arctic experiences will be posted to the TREC Virtual Base Camp as a complement to TREC teachers and researchers' expeditions.
You can email her directly during the expedition at: Laurier-Science05@pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca or post questions in the Ask the Teacher section of the Virtual Base Camp. Expedition Dates: 9 July 2005 – 23 July 2005 Expedition Name and Project Description: Bering/Chukchi Sea Ecosystem Study aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Sir Wilfrid Laurier International Joint Western Arctic Climate Study (JWACS), including 1) the Northern Bering Sea Ecosystem Study, 2) An Arctic Environmental Observatory in Bering Strait, and 3) Bering Strait Moorings as part of the Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interactions (SBI) project aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Expedition Researcher Dr. Jackie Grebmeier Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Tennessee, Knoxville jgrebmei@utk.edu About the Research Annual hydrographic and biological sampling are undertaken at select time series sites to evaluate ecosystem dynamics in the Bering and Chukchi seas through a collaborative agreement with scientists at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, Canada. In addition, we are turning around time series moorings in the northern Bering Sea and Bering Strait for understanding climatic change both locally and in the Arctic. The multiple projects on this cruise are sponsored by the US National Science Foundation, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and Office of Naval Research, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
