Description: Here I am at Summer Bay, near Dutch Harbor. I think the sand is dark because it is volcanic in nature. These dunes are one of the few depositional features. Most of the coastline shows evidence of erosion - just the opposite. What does deposition and erosion mean for sediment? Can you also see the flakes of snow? It started to snow like what I would call a blizzard while we were there.

Description: One of my favorite things to do is to collect shells and then find out their scientific name. I brought along my Audubon field guide for seashells, just in case, and look what I found! It is a Pacific Razor Clam (Siliqua patula). I found this at Summer Bay, washed up on the beach. Many of the specimens still had their periostracum in tact. A periostracum is the covering that usually flakes off before the shell washes ashore. It helps keep the shell from dissolving in seawater.

Description: This is a memorial to World War II. Dutch Harbor is often nicknamed "The Other Harbor." Everyone was trying to gain hold of islands on the Aleutian chain and there were a few fearce. There are many remnants of WWII around the town including buildings and concrete bunkers like the one you see at the bottom right of the picture.

Description: The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Ascension is Alaska's oldest cathedral. It was built in 1896, although the parrish was started much earlier in 1808. This is an example of the Russian influence on the Aleutian Islanders. It was restored in 1996 after being placed on the World Monument Watch List of the 100 most endangered sites in the world. I wish we could have seen inside.

Description: Have you ever wondered about the stranger sitting next to you on the plane? Well, I met a jewel of a row mate. This is Bruce Wright. He works for the Aleutian/Pribilof Islands Association and is the Executive Director of the Conservation Science Institute. He is involved in a lot of environmental research. In fact, he was on his way to set up water monitoring stations even further down the Aleutian Islands. Bruce was kind enough to school me on Alaskan wildlife and geography. Thanks, Bruce!

Description: This is my first view of Dutch Harbor from the ground. We walked across the tarmac from the plane to the terminal where they opened a garage door, through the luggage in, then closed the garage door. (Robin, just like you said!) Only, much of our luggage had to come on a later flight.

Description: The sea’s turquoise hue looks as inviting as water that’s found in the tropics. But looks can be deceiving: This trip to the beach requires a fleece scarf and a down jacket—and I am still cold!
