My Arctic Dream (5-14-05) My fascination with the Arctic and exploration began when, at age 11, my family visited a small “Heimat” museum in Herrenhut, Germany where expedition logs and artifacts from missionaries that worked in the Polar region were shown to the public. The name, Alfred Wegener , was mentioned often on the showcases. The last photo of Alfred Wegener, the originator of the theory of continental drift and Rasmus Villumsen, taken on 1 November 1930 (Wegener's 50th birthday). (Photograph courtesy of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Germany.) I was transfixed by the grainy, black and white photos of Alfred Wegener and his expedition party standing in the middle of a cold, icy world. Little did I know that one day I will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the magic of the Arctic region and to share my experience with others. Amazingly, it will soon be reality. I like to invite you to follow me on my two month long journey through the ice on the USCGC Healy starting on August 3, 2005, from Dutch Harbor, Aleutian Islands, Alaska.
