Hey Mrs. Kaden,

How is your expedition going? I hope you have made some interesting dicoveries, and hopefully you can share with us in the fall. Sorry about not being able to reply in the past, I couldn't find the link to this website. What is the nature like overthere and the living conditions? I hope everything is working out for you and the rest of the team. Take care.

Sincerlly,

Ray Castillo

Hi Ray,

Good hearing from you. I am on the USCGC Healy since August 2nd. I went on board in Dutch Harbor, AK. Read my teacher log about Dutch Harbor and Unalaska. It gives you a good overview about the Aleutian Islands. Dutch Harbor is the greatest fishing port of the US. I could see the big ships coming and going continuously. The average daily temperature is about 60 F. This is not really cold. Yesterday, we crossed the polar circle at 76.5 N. The days are getting longer. On our way through the Bering Sea we spotted some seals and whales and lots of birds. We think we will hit the ice in a day or so.

You will get the news from my teacher log.

Keep reading and tell your friends! It is fun talking to you from the Arctic.

Best regards,

U.Kaden
