TREC Virtual Base Camp _ Ask the Teacher (Dena) or the Scientist Team _ What do you need to pack for your trip?

Posted by: Janet_Warburton Nov 10 2005, 08:53 PM

Wow - you must be so excited about your upcoming trip! I'm familar with what people need to work in both the Arctic summer and winters - but not Antarctica.

What do you have to pack?
Are there limits on the amount of "stuff" you can take with you?
Are there any special clothes that you have to take?

I understand there is a warehouse in New Zealand that has more gear and you'll be stopping there before you go to Antarctica. What gear will you get there?

Thanks and we look forward to reading more about your trip!

Hi Janet:

I wasn't sure what to bring, so I emailed my friend Jean Pennycook, who has been down here for four seasons (summers). She sent me her list which included jeans, sweaters, toiletries, shoes, for 2 months. You receive all of your Extreme Cold Weather gear (ECW) from a warehouse in New Zealand called the Clothing Distribution Center (CDC) that supplies you with all of your "layers" of clothing for Antarctica. See my journal on Happy Camper School.

I could only bring 100 lbs of my own stuff, which isn't much considering it is for two months PLUS computer, cameras, etc.
