The Japanese fisherman used to use glass floats mark where their nets and traps were located and to help them retrieve them. The same way that now fisherman use styrofoam floats to float their nets or to mark crab pots, etc, the Japanese used to use glass ball floats. Now it is cheaper to use styrofoam.
