Dear Marilyn,
I know that the bear population is growing in some places in the U.S. due to increased protections. However, overall I do not know exactly what is happening to the bear population. However, I bet if you get in touch with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service you could find out the answer to your question. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!!
