This is the last entry related to the pictures I took leaving our orientation meeting in Fairbanks. Even more can be found in the picture gallery.

Mountain Islands
IPB Image
When I think of mountains, I think of long, linear ridges. This picture seems unusual because almost circular groups of mountains appear to pop out of the ground, giving them the appearance of being islands in a wide sea of land. What type of tectonic or other forces cause this pattern?

Fog or Smog?
IPB Image
The valley in the upper center of this picture seems to have a strange darkness to it. Is this fog or even maybe smog? Is there some other explanation?

The Alaskan Oil Pipeline?
IPB Image
If the Alaskan Airlines magazine flight path was reasonably close to what was shown, we should have been flying fairly close to the oil pipeline as we got closer to south-central Alaska and Valdez. This picture was taken about 58 minutes into the flight, so those familiar with the flight and pipeline might know the answer as to whether this picture shows the pipeline, or a road. What do you think it is?

Another Trans-Alaskan Pipeline Picture?

Pipeline or Road?

A Glacial Delta
IPB Image
This picture definitely shows how glaciers show evidence of flowing even if the flow rate is slow. Just to the lower-left of center, you can see a definite fan or delta shape of ice coming from a right-left oriented glacier spilling into a top-bottom oriented glacier to the left.

More Evidence of Glacial Flow--Crevasses
IPB Image
This picture again shows a medial moraine parallel to the glacier valley, but more evidence of ice movement is shown by the large cracks, or crevasses the go across the glacier.

Multiple Medial Moraines
IPB Image
Many sediment filled medial moraines are seen in this glacier. Based on the number of medial moraines, can you tell how many glaciers are further up this mountain even though all of them aren't shown in the picture?

Check Your Answer
IPB Image
This picture should help you determine if you correctly answered the question in the "Multiple Medial Moraines" picture.

Glacial Lake and Small Delta
IPB Image
Although it's a little hard to see, the picture shows the bright turquoise blue water that is characteristic of glacial meltwater. On the left side of the lake, you can see a well-formed delta created by an inflowing stream.

What's This?
IPB Image
There is a large body of water between the mountains in this picture that looks like a lake. However, about an hour after leaving Fairbanks towards Seattle, we might be getting close to the coastline, and this might be a long, narrow bay. If it is a bay, and the valley it is in was carved by a glacier, what is another name for this type of bay?
