Hello Max and Emmy. We are very glad to hear from you. How are you up there? I hope you are allright. I have some good news. The weather is quite good. We had two weeks of very and very hot weather. It was quite unusual ot have such kind of temperature right here. It was something about +35 C. Now it's windy here. And we have much smog because of fires around Zhigansk. All our students are on summer vocation now and the school year will from the 1st of September. Fishing is not so good now because of much water in the river. Our students would like to meet with the students from Alaska. Emmy, could help us to meet new friends from Alaska? By the way how is Oliver? And what about Chris? Send our greetings to them. That is all for now. We are all looking forward to hear from you.

Yours sincerely, Yana Andreeva

Hi Yana Andreeva,
Wow! What a great surprise to hear from you in Zhigansk. I'm glad that you were able to get on the web page and see what we have been doing in Alaska and Canada this year! It has been a fantastic opportunity to get to know two other villages in the Arctic like Zhigansk (although they are different in many ways)! It would be fantastic to work with you to connect your school in Zhigansk with the schools in Pilot Station and Tsiigehtchic. I think that students from each of the schools would be interested in meeting other students from around the Arctic. I will be working hard this fall to start to put together some ways to allow for this to happen. But the fact that you were able to get on the web and work with this web page is a great start--as I think that the web is going to be the best way for Zhigansk and the other villages in the Arctic to connect--at least at first.

I am sorry to hear that there are lots of wildfires around. I hope that smog is all that you have to deal with from them and that they don't put the town in danger! I can't believe how hot it has been in Zhigansk. Have lots of students been swimming in the river, or is it too high and dangerous for that as well?

Thanks for following our trip and I look forward to working with you more once school is back in session!

Your Friend,
Amy Clapp

Hello Yana,

It is very nice to hear from you and to see that you are able to access the TREC web site. As Amy said, during our recent trip we made very good connections with people living in communities near our sampling sites on the Mackenzie and Yukon rivers. We are very excited about developing interactions among our friends in Zhigansk and our new friends in Tsiigehtchic (Mackenzie River) and Pilot Station (Yukon River).

I'm sorry to hear about the forest fires that are occuring near Zhigansk. Hopefully the smoke won't get too bad and the fires will not get too close to Zhigansk. Many people expect that forest fires will become more frequent in the Arctic as the climate warms. Have you noticed any changes in the frequency or severity of forest fires in your region?

All the best,

Max

Note: Yana Andreeva is the principal/director of the school in Zhigansk, near our sampling site on the Lena River in Siberia. She and her teachers and students have been fantastic partners in our project and we are very excited for them to begin interacting with people living near our other study sites in Russia, Canada, and Alaska. Attached is a photo of Yana standing in front of a traditional Sakha lodge (she lives in a house but has this traditional shelter in her yard) as well as a photo of Amy and several students from the Zhigansk school.
