Hello Amy and Max!

I am glad that you are OK. Are there any ecological signs that Alaska climat has changed or is changing and that river discharge is growing?

Hello Sasha,

It is good to hear from you. Amy and I are now in Pilot Station, a Yupik Eskimo village (population 600) on the Yukon River. We got here yesterday and sampled from shore this morning and are about to go out on the boat for a quick sampling this afternoon. Our full PARTNERS Project sampling will be at the beginning of the week when our USGS collaborator arrives.

While we were on the Mackenzie River and now here in Pilot Station, we have spent a lot of time asking the local residents about their impressions of “climate change”. The responses have been very interesting. While some people outside of the Arctic still argue about whether the climate is really changing, here people are noticing big changes all the time. Some of the changes that people have told us about include thinning river ice, earlier ice breakup on rivers and lakes, thawing permafrost and thermokarst erosion, southern fish species moving north, and even the appearance of a polar bear in Tsiigehtchic where they had never seen one before. All these people are convinced that the climate is changing, and that overall the impact on their lives is negative.

Do people living in the Siberian Arctic notice similar changes?

Thanks again for the question,

Max

Hi Max,

Sasha is in Salekhard now making scheduled sampling.

He answered to your question by phone. Here is his answer:

There is no simple answer to your question, Max. People on the Lena river (Zhigansk village) notice changes of the weather. For example they told the same things about southern fish species.
I will write more detailed answer from Rostov ( on Monday, July 18).

Best regards to you all.

Sasha
