The ship is build stronger. It has for example double hulls (walls) to withstand the pressure and force of the ice and special protection for the rudder . We can hear and tell when we hit thick and strong multiyear ice. The whole ship is slowed down by it, vibrates and ice is crashing alongside and under the ship. The engineers have to drive it with more power. We can make about 3 knots through the medium thick ice (about 3-4 ft). Without ice we go an average of 16 knots. If the ice gets thicker the Healy has to ram it by going back and forth. We try to avoid situations like this by studying the ice conditions using satellite maps and through observation. On board of the Healy are experienced ice observers and people that interpret the satellite maps for that reason. We change course if pressure ridges and thick ice shows up localized. A good ice breaker is a strong ship that has a lot of power and inertia (mass).

Best regards,

Ute
