Mrs. MNO,
Zooming around the virtual Kuril Islands on Google Earth, it appears there are some spectacular volcanoes virtually popping out of the ocean on many islands. You haven't mentioned these, but you have said a bit about the fog. Have you had some chances for clear viewing of the islands and volcanoes as a whole?

Some of the more dramatic volcanoes of the Kuril Islands rising above the water. Clockwise from upper left - Atsonupuri on Itrurup Island, L'Vinaya Past Caldera on Iturup Island, Chirip on Iturup, and Nemo on Onekotan.

There are very many spectacular volcanoes throughout the Kuril Islands (when we can see them through the fog) and they do REALLY pop out. I have posted a picture with a couple of the more dramatic ones in the Photo Gallery.

Thanks!
