Last week Matt Decker of the Lebanon Daily Record and I talked about the Greenland trip. I came away from that meeting very impressed with the work that some of our local journalists are trying to do. Matt worked very hard to get good, accurate, and complete information. He had a story to tell and a short period of time to work with. He was trying to learn about the story so he could tell it to his readers through the eyes of the person experiencing the event. Tough job.

I was also impressed with an obvious, but sometimes forgotten, similarity between teaching and journalism. Those of us who teach try to learn our students so we can "connect" with them as we instruct and guide them. Journalists also seek to "connect" with their readers as they search for stories that will interest their local readers and audience. Both teachers and journalists have something to share with others and both are seeking ways to share.
