Leslie,
I notice the picture of the snow geese flock floating around in the water after they molted. Do they stay out in the water for a long time? I imagine the idea is protection from predators.

Hi Mike,

Yes, I think you're right. Being in the water provides them protection from fox and other terrestrial predators. They come out of the water to feed in the adjacent marshy areas. However, they are very wary of unusual activity, so when they hear the plane or helicopter they head for the water. By the time we see them, they are bunched up together floating around.
