Heavy seas – speeding toward Tromso, Norway
9-28-05 Ship Position at 2005/09/28 08:46:01 UTC Longitude: 14 23.726 E Latitude: 73 31.787 N "IBCAO" depth: 1021 m Fog, rising temperatures, no ice, 20 ft waves All maps underway by Steve Roberts Securing and tying down equipment for open water was the activity of the day. Outside temperatures are rising and the ice and snow on the ship we saw for months is melting. The ship’s crew is holding Quarters for the last time on an icy Helo deck. Quarters are held daily to acknowledge special accomplishments During daily quarters the ships officers promote people, acknowledge special accomplishments and certifications and pass along important information. When was the last time somebody acknowledged that the teacher did a good job or finished a continuing education college course? The coring crew finished processing and logging the last core collected the day before. All cores are stored safely in a container on the focsle of the ship. Now chief scientist Dennis Darby has this nightmare dream that a huge wave comes and all the cores go overboard- don’t worry Dennis, this container is glued to the deck by our MST’s! The ocean swells increased last evening. Heavier seas with waves up to 25 feet followed (information about the exact numbers vary greatly). The ship began rocking and rolling. My stomach started feeling weird- a sure sign for approaching sea sickness. I decided to close my computer, started walking around the ship and getting some fresh air. I felt better and after a good nights sleep despite erratic ships motions I consider myself in stable conditions . Remember casino night?! Here are the winners: Congratulations to the following big winners from Saturday’s Casino Night Auction: X-Box with game went for $61,000 to the 1st Class Lounge and SN Bilby; 512 Jump Drive went for $35,000 to FN Blas; $100 dinner certificate was nabbed by Dayton Dove for a mere $30,000; Lord of the Rings Trilogy cost BMC Kidd $30,000; MK2 Steele stole the 256 Jump Drive for $50,000; SN Boggeln is taking home an ivory piece for $50,000; FN Smith bid and won the hotel room for $145,000 (surprise, surprise). |
