Yesterday I had a phone conference with Donie, Janet from ARCUS and the helpful staff at VECO polar resources. We discussed my trip dates and the gear that I will need to bring with me.

I will be leaving Boston on Saturday June, 10 and hopefully arriving sometime on Saturday afternoon in Faribanks. On Tuesday I will take the Dalton Shuttle on a 12 hour trip up to the Toolik Field station. I’m told this is a long but fun trip and I’m sure I’ll see some cool things. I’ve learned from experience that the way to see things in a new place is to cross the place at ground level and at normal speeds. I’ll be at Toolik until the 29th or so and then I’ll be headed back to Fairbanks where I will stay for a few days before heading back to Boston on July 10. I’m excited to see what they do in Fairbanks for the fourth of July.

Toolik I’m told can be cold but is a fairly comfortable place to work. When I applied I had hoped to be in a more remote location but now that I have learned more about the field station I am excited to see it. It certainly doesn’t sound cushy and it still is really far away. Farther than you can get from people in New Hampshire. If you drove 12 hours from NH you’d possibly be in a remote part of Maine but still not quite as removed as the Toolik station. The station has several buildings that were left there from when the trans-Alaska oil pipeline was built. I will likely be staying in a greenhouse looking little two room tent with a roommate or two. I already feel sorry for them—I hope they bring ear plugs.

The station also has internet access and internet phones so for a technology idiot like me I should be able to stay connected.

Donie informed me that the site where she works is about a 15 minute walk from the main Toolik station. We will work during most of the day and then do lab work for an hour or so after dinner. The station serves a hot breakfast and a hot dinner—Donie even mentioned that gaining weight at Toolik is more of a problem than loosing it.

As you can see from the pictures—the gear list is nothing special. Just some clothing to stay warm and dry. I actually had most of the stuff packed already for a trip I’m taking this weekend up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After my field experience I plan to do some hiking around Denali and in the Brooks Range so I have been trying to get back into good hiking shape. This picture is of some friends and I hiking Mt. Percival in NH. I might have to hike something bigger than 2100 feet to increase my fitness.

All I am thinking is that I am really excited to join up with the Toolik team. It should make for a very fun and educational summer.

Hi Tom,
I can see that you are getting ready for your trip. I admire your organized and economic technique for packing. Being a woman I need a training course on that part. rolleyes.gif I will follow your journal and I am really looking forward to your posts and photos.
All the best for you and your team members,

Ute Kaden
