Kevin & Mike,
With temperatures well below freezing, are you in any danger by spending the night in your tents? And why are you sleeping in tents when it looks like there are perfectly comfortable, warm buildings nearby? ---J&K |

Kevin & Mike, With temperatures well below freezing, are you in any danger by spending the night in your tents? And why are you sleeping in tents when it looks like there are perfectly comfortable, warm buildings nearby? ---J&K Good question! I was thinking about that myself. We have sleeping bags that are designed to keep us warm in -40 degree Celsius weather. Some nights we will be flirting with that limit. However, it hasn't been a problem in the past . People have shared tips on how to stay warm at night. One tip I learned today was to fill a water bottle with boiling hot water and put it at the bottom of the sleeping bag. Mike suggests just wiggling around a lot in the sleeping bag until it warms up. I think I'll try the water bottle tonight. Another reason that we don't sleep in buildings is that it we would have to burn a lot of diesel fuel to run the generators. Since we are studying what particles are in the atmosphere, we don't want to taint the results of our experiments by having more diesel fuel burning than is absolutely necessary. We are also in the largest national park in the world. We are trying to keep it as pristine as when we arrived. Thanks for checking in with us. |
