Description: The bone half extracted from the matrix of the Liscomb quarry appears to be a dinosaur toe bone. After talking with Tony and Thomas, it appears this bone is quite small. If the dinosaur lived long enough to reach adulthood, the bone could reach the size of an average man's foot.

Description: Dave found some Cenozoic sea shell fossils that told a neat story. Some of the shells had a neat hole drilled through them. Dave explained the hole was from the Moon snail, which attached itself to its prey and bore a hole through shells to reach the flesh.

Description: Mike holds a 65-70 million year old piece of coalified wood. This wood was originally transported during a flood during the time of the dinosaurs and quickly buried. Since tree size is somewhat dependent upon temperature, this large piece of wood suggests this part of Alaska was much warmer in the past.

Description: Almost every morning on the Colville River resembles this photo of Dr. Paul McCarthy. When the rain and fog are this thick, it is necessary to wait for the Sun rise higher and warm things up a little.

Description: Pete, Doloris, and I spent the evening buring things that needed burning. It was the finest evening I experienced on the North Slope. This photo of a third quarter moon was taken exactly at midnight.

Description: Our main source of food during the field experience is dehydrated food which happens to contain entirely too much sodium for any human to consume in a lifetime. Fortunately, Dave brought a gill net to snag some fresh fish from the river.

Description: Nothing brings a group of men (and woman) together more than burning stuff. We burned many interesting things because we wanted to keep smells from camp to a minimum so bears stayed away. I am sure most can guess why we prefer standing upwind.

Description: The Dino Team has been working in extremely difficult conditions and it finally took its toll. After a quick lunch of pilot bread and trail mix, everyone become intoxicated with sleep. Unfortunately, this nap was only five minutes in duration because the team work up when I snapped the photo.

Description: This is a toe bone found in the float of the Kikak-tegoseak quarry. Constant cycles of freezing and thawing force bone upward toward the surface. Then, the bone moves downward from the bedrock due to gravity.

Description: The dinosaur footprint discovered by Paul does not show well on film. I added a red line to show the dinosaur footprint which allows you to appreciate the size of the animal creating the depression. Tony's hands show the approximate diameter of the footprint.

Description: Jason points to the nasal cavity of a pachyrhinosaur. This newly discovered skull has the team excited because it appears to be intact. The skull is presently upside down, so the brush sits atop the upper jaw. All efforts focus on extracting this skull from the bluff before the field season closes.

Description: Many bear prints are located near camp. Next to this print, is a smaller set of prints. Dolores and Pete saw a grizzly cub so it is easy to assume the prints are a mother and her cub.

Description: Tony points to a newly discovered dinosaur footprint found by Dr. Paul McCarthy about one mile up river from the Kikak-tegoseak quarry. The impression, not visible in this photo, suggests the land was dry enough to support movement of large animals.
