TREC Virtual Base Camp _ Ask the Scientist (Lee) _ Hello

Posted by: Bobby Ungwiluk May 13 2006, 06:19 AM

Hello from Bobby Ungwiluk. This is the future scientist/tribal chairman/mayor/Yupik teacher here in Gambell. I may not be doing all these at once but i can try. Are you coming to GAM with Ruth? I sure would like to meet you. I might be able to give you some info on how the ice is becoming unstable each year. This year the ice has been very good. Last years ice was good but found the ice becoming unstable even before we knew about global warming. Next year is my last year in school. School is almost out! Hooray biggrin.gif cool.gif

Hi, Bobby,

I'm going to answer directly from the ship without logging in because the internet is very slow from the ship, but I'd have to wait a day or two to answer your note otherwise. One of the scientists on the ship, Jim Lovvorn is going to come to Gambell tomorrow on the ship's helicopter, weather permitting. Gay Sheffield is also going to come out to the ship as part of her marine mammal studies. I'm not sure that I will be able to come into town, but we may have a chance, as the helicopter is going to come a couple times over the next few weeks. I have had the chance to visit Gambell several times, so I'd like to also see if one or both of the teachers we have here could come and of course space on the helicopter is limited.

We can talk further about the changes in ice in and around St. Lawrence Island though and maybe we could do that on Monday during the planned conference call. We were very impressed with how well you did at the Anchorage science exhibition and wish to congratulate you on your efforts.

It's good you are ready to finish high school and move on, but remember these days that getting a college education is very important for being able to make the world a better place, so leave a little room in your schedule and aspirations for that.

Best wishes, Lee Cooper
