Back and forth- an quite and icy Sunday
9/4/05 It is cold outside, – 7 C. The wind makes things worse. The weather changes quickly from sunny periods, to fog and to snow showers. Yesterday, we crossed the International Date Line 180W to E. We are in transit to the next science station behind the Swedish ice breaker Oden. Heavy ice with lots of pressure ridges slowed us down to an average speed of 2 knots. The Healy had to back and ram for more than 5 hours (photo). One could see the path the ship had broken into the ice closing behind the ship immediately- a sign of ice pressure. Difficult ice conditions prompt constant changes from the original plan. Somebody renamed on our map server Current Waypoints to “The path of deception” and HLY 0503 Orig Plan to “The path of lies…” Overall, a quite Sunday (photo combo). Only PI’s had heated planning meetings. We are sure, they will figure it out. Many activities for a Sunday!
