Sunday On the Healy
8-14-05 The sun came out today, still small patches of fog, Air Temperature 1.3 C, meltpond sea, ice about 1-3 m with leads, 90% coverage. Arctic ocean Longitude: 154 W Latitude: 78 N, Sunday, 8-14-05 Sunday on the USCGC Healy When I went to bed I reminded myself not to forget that it will be Sunday when I wake up. It is easy to mix up the days of the week. The daily routine is similar each day, science and work does not stop on Sundays. The ship is moving forward to our next coring station for Monday. N-9 (Healy breaking sea ice ice 1-3m) Speaking of ongoing science, Yngve Kristoffersen (Chief- Scientist, University of Bergen), Hans Berge (University of Bergen), Tore Aarthun (University of Bergen), Vibeke Bruvoll (University of Bergen), Hedda Breien (University of Oslo), Erik Grindheim (University of Bergen), Karina Monsen (High School Student) and Fredrik Ludvigsen (High School Student) are the seismic team members from Norway. Yes, Karina and Fredrik are High School Students. Karina and Fredric are here to learn about the great opportunities science has to offer and help with seismic data collection and everything else. I will interview them later for you. Way to go people! Yngve directing the crane for the air guns Erik controls the computers for the seismic gear Karina, Tore, Vibeke, Hedda and Fredrik listen to Dr. Coakley’s explanation of the seismic data The fantail team is always working Yngve Kristoffersen developed the seismic air gun equipment which makes seismic data collection about the ocean floor possible. In order to keep the equipment working andcollecting data continuously the Norwegians are working 24/7. No matter what day or time it is, there will be always somebody from the team out on the fantail of the ship making sure everything is going well. Action on the fantail of the ship air gun assembly which produces the sound wave for the seismic data collection Hans and Yngve on the fantail The air guns going in the water There is more science going on a Sunday. The coring people are storing their labeled and processed cores in the freezer and Japanese ice researchers processing data. Cores getting stored Dale Hubbard carries cores to the refrigeration container Sandrine, Emma and Martin getting cores ready for freezing Our Japanese ice scientists processing data on the computer Overall, it seems that things are going a bit slower on a Sunday, the food is great, movie selection acceptable and people have a smile on the face. Things are going well on the Healy! I have attached the POD (Plan of the Day) for Sunday, 8-14-05. Best regards, Ute Attached File(s) POD_Sunday_8_14_05.pdf ( 135.05k ) Number of downloads: 55 |
